Few sights in the British garden rival a mature Wisteria in full bloom — cascading racemes of soft lavender-blue flowers, each cluster reaching up to 30cm long, dripping from twining stems in a breathtaking late-spring display. Intensely fragrant and impossibly romantic, it brings an almost painterly quality to walls, pergolas, and archways. A long-lived and rewarding climber that becomes more spectacular with every passing year.
Care
Thrives in full sun with shelter from cold winds; a south- or west-facing wall is ideal. Water well when establishing, then moderately once mature. Prune twice yearly: cut back whippy new shoots to 5 leaves in late July/August, then shorten the same shoots to 2–3 buds in January/February to encourage flowering spurs. Provide strong support as mature plants become very heavy.
